Freedom Sounds Radio

The Freedom Sounds radio show is a collaboration between DJ Moth and Motiv/New Dreams Quartet horn player, Steve. In their first series of shows, DJ Moth and Steve sought to span the genres, playing a range of new and classic tracks from jazz to neo-soul, afro-funk to contemporary electronic beats. For this, their second series, they will keep the same eclectic and open-minded approach but bring a more in-depth focus to a particular artist or genre.

The latest show is a tribute to Freddie Hubbard, the legendary jazz trumpeter. Hubbard changed the way jazz trumpet was played and can therefore be regarded as one of the greatest musicians of the 20th Century. He crossed the boundaries of modern jazz, soul and funk without artistic compromise. Following an audacious debut, Open Sesame, recorded at the age of 22, Freddie went on to make a crucial contribution to Herbie Hancock's Maiden Voyage, and landmark albums such as Blues and the Abstract Truth, by Oliver Nelson, and Out to Lunch, by Eric Dolphy. After further developing his artistry on recordings such as Backlash (Little Sunflower) and Black Angel, he moved towards soul and funk during a period with CTI Records. A return to 'straight ahead' jazz during the latter stages of his career brought his music full circle. Freddie remains a touchstone for trumpet players and musicians everywhere, a quality that Freedom Sounds celebrates in this new show.

Also still available to download is the previous edition, which features an extended interview with jazz/nu-jazz keyboard player, producer and composer Mark de Clive-Lowe. Mark talks about his new projects and live shows in the US, and discusses some of the jazz artists who influenced his sound. The playlist includes Mark's musical influences such as Harry Whitaker (Black Renaissance), Harvey Mason and Miles Davis as well as tracks from his own live and studio albums.

You can download a full tracklist for both shows from the 'resources' section at the bottom of the page.
