Mike Hobart is an experienced and soulful saxophonist with a warm tone and fluid technique. His compositions capture the detail of the urban experience as they unfold through sixties shuffles and Blue Note swing to edgy funk and nuanced R'n'B. The written music acts as signposts, allowing the band to roam freely over the tradition. Miles' 60s rhythm section is the model, but the content is very different - a lot has happened since then.
The Urban Jazz Collective keeps the improv flowing, but add world music flavours and the rhythms of contemporary dance with a mix of strong originals and well-chosen covers. Though a new outfit, they have already played a well-received first gig at the Oxford Jazz festival.
